October 28 - Hurricane Sandy Day

It would be an experience we would never forget.

Monday October 28. The meteorologists were forecasting that Sandy would make landfall on the East Coast anytime between 1pm and 6pm. The time kept shifting.
Schools were cancelled for the day. Daddy was off work too.
We were prepared, with torch lights, canned food, drinking water and warm blankets.

Morning: we were bored. Dad said we could carve a pumpkin.

Jon Jon and I got busy..

Our pumpkin was done in 30 minutes! Ta da!!

After that, we waited and waited. We had lunch. There was a light drizzle all morning, but nothing dramatic. By 3pm, the winds started blowing a little harder, but rain was just medium drizzle. Mom cooked dinner early, since there was still power.

At 4:45pm, the power went out. We quickly took baths while there was still light.
At 5:45pm, it was starting to get dark outside. The winds and rain were a little heavier, but nothing scary. We ate dinner by candle light.

Then we took out the guitar and sang songs, by candlelight, and then we played the piano and sang together. At 7:30, we were all in the basement, getting ready for a family sleepover. We played Uno by torch light, then got ready for bed.

At 9:30, the winds started blowing hard. Mom and Dad were awake, and described what they heard like being close to the ocean. The strong winds blew the leaves on the trees and it sounded like massive waves of the ocean. It was so dark outside we could not see anything at all.

We slept through the hurricane.

Next morning, we woke up to find twigs and branches all over  the yard, but so thankful that no trees had fallen. We drove around the neighborhood and found others were not as lucky. But overall it was far less worse than we had imagined.

We survived Hurricane Sandy.
